About the Chobits animangaChobits is an animanga (anime + manga = animanga! whee~) from the very talented artists of CLAMP. The manga was published from 2001 to 2002 by Kodansha, a big Japanese publisher of literature and manga. Its headquarters is found in Tokyo. The Chobits anime, meanwhile, was released in 2002 under Studio CLAMP. It has a total of 26 episodes. In the DVD special it has an additional episode, consisting of different conversations, as well as a five-minute film starring Sumomo and Kotoko, two of the Laptop Persocoms in the series. The Chobits timeline takes place in the future, where personal computers, or Persocoms (Persocons), take the form of actual human beings. The story revolves around Motosuwa Hideki, a country boy who failed his college entrance exam. He moved to the city to get a job and attend cram school in order to pass the next college entrance exams. He wanted a Persocom for himself, but couldn't afford one because of financial reasons. But one day, he finds a Persocom amongst the trash while he was passing a building. He takes the persocom home and searches for her switch, which he finds at the, erm, private-part-down-there. *swt* When he switches the persocom on, all she could say was "Chii", and so that's what Hideki calls her. This marks the start of the humorous and fun-filled, yet mysterious story of Chobits. I loved this animanga the moment I first heard of it. It was from the CLAMP girls, first off, who are all talented and make extremely beautiful artwork. I first heard of CLAMP from Magic Knight Rayearth and absolutely loved their color combinations, character design; their overall style, really. I also love their stories. It's like I know every character has something to contribute to the series, but I don't know what. They surprise me, really. From then on, I became one of their fangirls. XD When I first saw Chobits, I was immediately loved the artwork. Big eyes, cat-like ear-things, small nose and mouth; what's not to like about it? XD Chii was one of the most adorable characters I've ever seen and the colors used were generally pastel (girly-girl colors YAY!). I also loved the concept of Chobits. For me it raises a mind-boggling question: could love between a human and robot be possible? Perhaps it might seem impossible for robots to act, think, and look exactly human, but with new technologies coming to life all around us, every day, and at an extremely fast rate, I think in the future it will be possible to create a human-like robot. And if a robot becomes too human-like, are we, in fact, the same? What makes a human, really? For me, Chobits managed to raise this question without becoming too serious. It has its light and funny moments, as well as it's sweet and romantic ones. As the series progressed I fell in love with Chii and Hideki's relationship. Even if Hideki loves his girls (and his pr0n lol), he treats Chii with tenderness and respect. I also like how Chii slowly learned about things. My favorite one was when she learned that a person doesn't just hug anyone; they hug someone important to them. Afterwards, Chii asked Hideki if she could hug him. It was so cute! :D I couldn't help but squeal. :D Every character in Chobits had a role to play, even if at first they just seemed to be there for the sake of cuteness. I was surprised that Ueda's character became so fleshed-out; I thought he was just a store owner! XD I liked how each character was utilized and how they contributed to the story. Chobits fleshes out the positive and negative effects of a world with human-like robots, so it's not entirely one-sided. The sweet and touching romantic scenes and the mystery of Chii's real identity adds interest to the story, and this makes Chobits one of my favorite animanga's. :) | ![]() |
